I asked this question an hour ago and only had 2 answers; which were both different. I need the correct answer please. in 1962 crime rate is 3,752. In 2002 crime rate is 11,877. What is the increase in percentage? Thanks.

Increase = 11877 - 3752 / 3752

Think of a simpler example. Say something happened 2 times today and 3 times tomorrow. That would be 50% more tomorrow or (3-2)/2 = 1/2
Some people will tell you it is 3/2, that is wrong. The increase is not 150% in this simple case.

To get a percent change, you take the second amount, divide it by the first amount, and subtract 1.
11877 / 3752 = 2.165511
This is in decimal form, so you multiply by 100 to get a percentage.
216.5511%
The answer is NOT 32%. I assume this person found what percent of 11877 3752 is.
The answer is NOT 16%. I have absolutely no idea where this came from.
The answer is NOT 317%. This problem is asking for the percent INCREASE. 3.17 is how many times bigger the final amount is than the original amount. When finding percent increase, you have to ignore the original 100%, because you want to know how much it changed from that.

11,877 DIVIDED BY 3,752 = 3.1655
THAT MEANS THAT CRIME HAS INCREASED BY 3.1566 AS MUCH. IN 2002 CRIME IS 3.1655 TIMES MORE PREVALENT THAN IT WAS IN 1962. OR 317% HIGHER
