Lisa is correct.
There is one train a day from Boston (leaves around noon) to Albany-Rensselaer (5:30 p.m.), and one from NYC to Montreal (by way of Albany-Rensselaer at about 10:40 a.m.; arrives in Montreal 6:30 p.m.). There are decent hotels within a short cab ride; some in downtown Albany, some along I-90.
If you don't want to overnight in Albany, you can also take an overnight train to NYC, and catch the Montreal train (The Adirondack) at 8:15 a.m. The only train that would fit this niche leaves Boston at 9:45 p.m. and arrives in NYC at 3 a.m.
Catching the train at the outset gives you a better choice of seats, and the Boston-NYC corridor is less prone to delays than Bos-Alb.
For the Albany, Montreal leg, you want to be on the right side, so you face Lake Champlain. If you get on at NYC, you want to be on the left, facing the Hudson. The train usually gets emptier after Albany.

Oh, you poor soul!
Alas, until the late 1960s you could just go to Lowell station and hop onto a direct train to Montreal. Then passenger service (by the B&M railroad was discontinued).
However, to answer your question, it is still possible, although it is a long and expensive schlep.
Take the T's Purple Line from Lowell to North Station, Boston.
Then the T's Orange Line metro from North to Back Bay station.
From there you take Amtrak to Albany, NY, switching there to the train to Montreal. You will have to overnight in Albany.
