Most of the rays penetrate 4 - 4 1/2 feet below the surface. So, for most people, your body still gets sun (except your feet etc...).

yes, actualy the water reflects the sun very well, so you get tan faster in the water than you do when you are out of the water.

no they dont because the vertical rays of the sun is hitting the water which bounces off the surface of the water therefore you are only sun tanning from your waist up

yeah you get a better tan while in the water because the rays are evenly distributed throught the pool.......when i swam during the summer in the mornig for two hours a day at swim practice i never got burnt and i got dark

yep, the light penetrates down several feet, but it loses intensity the farther it goes down. I can't remember the exact rate but at 1.5 feet below the water the suns rays are 40% as intense as at the surface.

depends on what kind of water you swim in--i usually swim in a lake outside in the summer my legs do not get as dark as my arms and everything else

yeah i was at the beach all day once and i was in the water 99% of the time when i got home i was red, and burning.
