Why do you think teams seem to be under the gun so early into the new NHL's seasons the last 2 years. It's as if you cant lose anymore. But only 1 team wins each night so how does this work. I hear more and more reports about how teams need to rebuild and trade players.

the teams with real talent are winning and the so-so teams are losing badly, not even having a chance.

it's feast or famine now, so many teams, not enough talent to go around.
the nhl, after canning bettman, needs to drop about six teams.

Depends on the team. In Toronto, they never really rebuild..they try to top up their team by buying a few has beens near the end. They don't need to win, they are the richest team by providing a possible contender and selling tickets, TV , and Merchandise. If they had of kept their picks and rebuilt i.e.Boyes etc. they would have sucked for a couple of years, but would have been real contenders. Hey it's a business first, aqnd Toronto will carry on another 40 years without a Cup..And still be RICH..

I was just thinking about that last night while I was pondering the futures of Paul Holmgren and John Stevens. Big Ed has an itchy trigger finger and I thought that the coach will be replaced yet again this year. The environment in sports nowadays is "win now, to hell with tomorrow" with little value given to loyalty and length of service. Yet there are examples of small market, small budget teams that win due to their investment in the future. St. Louis Cardinals, San Antonio Spurs, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Pittsburgh Steelers are my examples of how a sports franchise should be run. The astonishing thing here in Philly is that with all the new stadiums and especially the Comcast money invested in the indoor teams, not to mention that Philly is the largest city in the United States without multiple teams in any sport, we have nothing to show for it. At least the Eagles have a system that leaves them able to operate competitively in the long term and despite my criticism of Ed Snider he still wants to win. The Phillies are still in the Dark Ages while the Sixers are a complete mess.

(7 hours later) I whole-heartedly agree with Countpetez's answer.
