How serious is moderate dysplasia? How often does it turn into cancer? And does cervical cancer affect people of all ages, or usually in a certain age group? I'm 22 and ws just told I have a spot of mild and a spot of moderate dysplasia. The nurse couldn't tell me much about it, and I don't fully understand everything about it.

p.s. I do not have HPV. I specifically asked, there is no trace of HPV in my tests. Apparently this can happen naturally too.

It means you have a mild HPV infection (human papiloma virus). But don't worry! since the dysplasia is still mild you can have more than 10 years before it starts to get serious. Just make sure you keep up your regular pap smears & your dr will treat it when it becomes necessary.
Please don't worry, most women will have HPV infections, that's why we're supposed to get pap smears to stop it developing into cancer. But keep in mind, that takes a long time if you keep yourself healthy :)

I also got the same diagnosis and procedure done to fix it. The surgery itself is an outpatient surgery. They will put you under Anesthesia do the procedure. You will wake up feeling groggy and crampy. After a few hours they will probably let you go home if there aren't any complications. They are testing you for HPV just to be on the safe side. You may not have it. Also men can be carriers of this and not know it. I suggest you have your partner checked as well as he could just give it to you again. since it is moderate it most likely wont come back. You will have to get pap smears more often over the next year or so to keep an eye on it. I never had another problem with it after that one time and im 34 now. The likely hood of this coming back or actually cause cancer later on are pretty minor. since you are having the leep procedure it will eliminate the pre cancerous cells. Its basically a preventative thing. So be glad they caught it right away. And good for you for getting regular check ups.

I had an abnormal pap that ended up being a form of displaysia. I asked my Bio teacher at the time and she eluded to that the cells that are forming on your cervix are abnormal. And they are not growing properly. She also advised that it is usually nothing to worry about, but it could be an indication of a presence of HPV. You will most likely have to have a biopsy done on your cervix if you already have not. No worries, it is usually painless and would be performed in the doctor's office. However, I do understand your concern and would be a little alarmed myself Just make sure you ask your doc all of the right questions so that you will be somewhat at ease. You are still quite young, so it may just be a change that your body is going through. Good Luck!!

You might try taking a high potency multiple vitamin and extra folic acid and Vitamin B12. Even so, have this checked regularly by a competent physician. It needs to be monitored.
