I've struggled with my weight for years. Currently, I am not fat. Unfortunately, people who have never struggles with weight problems are the ones who sit and judge those who do!

I weight about 475 and am 5'9". Easily within the category of 'morbidly obese'.
Depressed? Sure- my cash flow sometimes depresses me, and occasionally I get depressed over how things are going in my life.
I even get depressed once in a while because I have difficulties accomplishing certain things- buying clothes that I like at regular stores (I wear 64"x29" jeans and 5XL shirts), not being able to easily fit in all cars, paying extra on some airlines. I can't ride horses or bicycles, etc.
Why don't I try to lose weight? I do try. My cholestrol numbers and blood pressure are OK, I have been trying to do good portion control and better foods and that helps. I hit the gym a couple nights a week to try to build up my knees and aerobic cababilities. I try to take the stairs, etc.
One thing I lack is energy. The sheer inertia of lugging this stuff around all day is tiring. Even taking a shower and getting dressed can exhaust me. I've thought about various surguries, but the risks and poor long-term success worry me.
Sure my self-esteem sometimes suffers, but it suffers more from messing up at work or something than it does from the weight (althought that don't help). I know a lot of skinny b*tt people with poor self-esteem too- a lot are a lot worse than me.
So, overall, there are others that deserve your pity and concern more than most of us fatties do.

Yes. I have gained a lot of weight since the birth of my daughter and am now considered obese. Part of the reason fat people don't seem to be trying to lose weight is because they are depressed and that makes it so much harder to get motivated to lose weight. I try very hard and then someone comments on how fat I am and that depresses me and I lose my motivation. Sometime I try to let it make me mad to motivate me more but you can't stay mad about such things forever. I hope this helps you understand why we don't seem to try to lose weight.

I would be. I have been above my normal weight and didn't like it. Not only because it didn't look good, but also because it did not feel good. There are a lot of reasons why people become overweight and obese and depression is one of them. It becomes a vicious cycle and practically impossible to break without proper counselling. Try not to judge as you don't know the reasons for people being the way they are. Also, you don't know if they are trying or not. And by the way, what do others think of you?

Well, I battled an eating disorder when I weighed 95 pounds and was depressed then. Took meds gained a lot of weight- up to 210. Now I'm 177 which is still definitely overweight but I like how I look and I'm happy with appearance.... I'm bipolar though so depression is still an issue but it has absolutely nothing to do with my size.

I was fat once and I was depressed. I'd look in the mirror and I'd look like Santa. I lost 45 pounds and felt a lot better, but I'm starting to put it back because I'm back on sodas again. Bad move on my part!

Well, I think you should be depressed anyways, because you are wasting time asking retarded question like this.
haha, i think i should be depressed too, because I even bother to answer your stupid question.
I don't think people's physique soley contributes to their self-esteem, there are alot of other factors too. People try to lose weight for a number of reasons, not just to look good.
Gosh, i still can't believe i answered your dumb question
Seriously, get a life
ah, how ironic

slim people always seem to think that fat people don't try to lose weight. are you crazy?! of course they do, it's not always that easy. some people have fast metabolisms and find it easy to keep weight off but some people have slow metabolisms and struggle to keep weight off.
I'm not fat but i'm not as slim as i'd like to be and i find it's really hard to keep weight off. I think if i was fat then i would be depressed, especially because of the images of thin people that are everywhere. Who says you have to be thin to be beautiful?
Arg! it makes me mad!!!

A lot of over weight people think they are beautiful. A lot of skinny people believe they are ugly. A lot of people are crazy as hell and do gross things. I think if I was any fatter than I am now I wouldn't want to be naked in a magazine. But if I was offered a lot of money I just might do it.
