Can anyone hack into your computer?
(Anyone like your friends, co-workers, etc.. basically anyone who gets ahold of you IP address.)

And what exactly happens when someone hacks into your computer?
Can they see exactly would you do and perhaps even control your computer? Or can they even control your computer?

thanks. I know this is a lot of questions, but I'm paranoid about all this computer hacking and spyware thing. :-|

Not anyone can hack into your computer but it can be done. What all users need to do is the preventative maint. Make it a task for a hacker so that they move on or caught before they get anywhere.

If you are that worried about it then implement a high leve of security and be smart.

1) make sure you have all of the latestest security updates
2) Make sure you have a firewall setup for your internet connection - and do it right. There are additional security levels that can be set up in a firewall router that notch up the protection levels.
3) do not set up shares on your hard drive
4) do not have any unnecessary open ports on the firewall
5) Get a good virus protection program and keep it up to date!
6) Get a couple good adware programs and keep it up tp date (search and destoy offers a lot of additional protections and is free) - keep it updated
7) Put a second firewall in place - software like zone alarm on your system - Keep it updated
8) Make sure that all incoming email is scanned as well as any attachments
9) make sure you set up a secure login on your computer
10) don't share your computer
11) set up a high level security in your Internet browser (consider using Firefox as an option to IE since it is more commonly attacked)
12) log off your computer when you are finished using it
13) set up a secue wireless network using WAP rather than WEP if you want wireless.
14) do not broadcast your ID (aplies to wireless router only)
15) Don't open any unexpected attachments or click on all of those links your friends send to you.
16) use "text only" within email
19) keep your email programs patched (if you have a client)
20) do NOT use "Bad" programs like "Limewire" or any sharing programs (for that matter any program that is free has a high probability of putting something you don't want on your sysytem without your knowledge.)
21) Routers "NAT" your local network - in other words it hides your IP behind the firewall. You can also hide your IP with some of the tools embeded in routers.
22) Don't use IM programs

I could go on but I spend a good deal of my time fixing systems because one or more (usually more) of these issues are not addressed. This is a good start though! ;)

Don't listen to babe19. She's advertising. If you think you might have a trojan, then just load an anti-spyware program (recommended programs: McAfee, Norton, AdAware SE) and do a smart scan. Most browsers will alert you if you have a trojan downloaded. Use Mozilla Firefox (its the #1 invention of 2005 according to PC world) to prevent any future damage to your computer. And nobody gets hacked these days. Don't sweat it.

Spyware can collect many different types of information about a user. More benign programs can attempt to track what types of websites a user visits and send this information to an advertisement agency. More malicious versions can try to record what a user types to try to intercept passwords or credit card numbers. Yet other versions simply launch popup advertisements. While some forms of spyware can certainly be considered malicious, some on the other hand certainly are not, and are more passive in nature by just watching, observing, and collecting information.

I suggest you use a good spyware resource to delete the spyware present on your computer such as :

if it helps kindly remember me in your voting!.. cheers!
