When I get them I usually take pain pills given to me by my doctor, but sleep is a good help and just lying down not doing anything in the dark with no noise helps me a lot too. You might try to ask your doctor about preventatives for them.

I'v suffered with them for years and have yet to have found relief without medication. The best med I have found is Zomig..2mg. Doesn't make me sleepy..I take as soon as I feel a migrain coming on. 80% of the time I have instant relief. However, the times that it does not work the only thing I can go do is find a very quiet, dark and cool room..and like everyone else.. use a cold ice pack. There are times when a cold ice pack does not work and I have used a heating pad. Sounds crazy, but sometimes the heat actually feels better. If the pain is more in the base of my skull..heat is better.. If anyone ever finds a real cure for these things what a glorious day that will be!!

Try starting yoga and getting regular massage when you don't have headaches. Be easy on yourself when the headaches come on instead of fighting the pain which only can cause tension. Get a memory foam pillow, usually about $19. Cold packs on the back of your neck may help. And though caffeine is a drug, a few sips of a good dark roast can help since caffeine contracts capilaries and migraines occur when capilaries expand. Quit mammal meats for a while or make certain they are organic. Cut out dairy unless it too is organic. Eat more soy. and avoid anything with High Fructose Corn Syrups, Partially Hydrogenated, or bleached anything or artificial sweetners. Make sure you are eating ALOT of fruits and vegetables, organic again. If this seems like too much to do, then enjoy your headaches. But if you are missing out on life because of headaches, its worth a try.

At the first sign of a headache (which usually ends up a migraine) I dab a little lavender essential oil on my temples, forehead, back of neck and a touch under my nose.
I lie down with a cool cloth over my eyes. No light, no noise. Breathe deep relaxing breathes.
This works for me, but everyone is different. There were quite a few good answers to this question and a lot of folks with migraines!
Also, Lavender essential oil is can be applied neat to the skin whereas most all essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil.
Can you figure out what sets off your headache?

Put you thumbs on the part where the back of your Three pressure points: 1. Where the neck meets the back of your skull. Then with your thumbs push in and upward. Do that about two to three times to that pressure point. 2. Another spot is the sides of your head at eye level. Massage your temples, basically. 3. The third spot doesn't really stop the headache, so much as get your mind off it. Between your index finger and thumb there is that flap of skin that connects the two, just behind that area is a nerve. Massage that nerve. It'll hurt like hell, but will get your mind off the headache.

I suffer from migraines also.
I have tried tiger balm on the temples and forehead or an ice pack and lie in a dark room.
This will only help me if the migraine is not too severe otherwise the only remedy for me is a strong migraine tablet......Mersyndol... it must be taken as soon as the signs that the migraine is coming or else you will have to go with the first suggestion.
If you take the medication as soon as the triggers begin you shouldn't get nauseated. You would only get nauseated if the migraine is set in.
I hope it works because I believe there is nothing worse than a migraine, it is so debilitating.
I feel for you.

The herb Feverfew is a good preventative - it doesn't help a migraine once you have it, but has been known to reduce the number and intensity in some people.
A quick thing to try:
Dab a little Lavender essential oil on your forehead between your eyes, on either side of your nose, and on your temples.
I use this remedy, and it works on me almost like turning off a switch.

I get them and don't use meds.....what works for me is a hot bath, with a cold pack on my head....the throbbing pain starts to ease. There is a theory about this type of bath, saying the the cold pack reduces the swelling in the head....I dunno. Where I live they are testing doing chiropratic stuff on the neck and upper back, and so far the tests show that this is a cause for migraines....maybe that is worth checking out.
I know my migraines are caused by being exhausted, whether mentally or physically, so once I have dulled the throbbing pain in my head a little I darked the bedroom and go to sleep. An hour or so later, I wake up fine.

Some people take feverfew herb as a preventative. Calcium-magnesium-zinc pills 3 times a day may give some relief.
I have heard many good testimonies from people who drank Monavie juice on a regular basis (info on request)
Some have gotten completely headache free on this product.

I get really bad migraines too, and i usually just lay down in a quiet place and put an ice pack on my head. It helps a lot. They also have masks that you can wear, that you put in the freezer for a little bit, those work veryyy well.
