What They Do

Biotechnologists combine biology and technology to solve problems in health care. They also help with the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals (prescription drugs), foods and other products.

Biotechnologists work in applied research or product development. They do research to develop new drugs and medical treatments and to increase crop yields. They may also work with customers or suppliers.

Biotechnologists work in a variety of settings. These include academic research centers, medical centers and commercial industry. In medicine, biotechnologists analyze DNA to search for mutations that cause genetic diseases (such as sickle-cell anemia).

Research biotechnologists use DNA technology and protein modeling to develop and test new drugs. They may also supervise lab assistants.

Biotechnologists also play important roles in forensics. They analyze collected samples of blood, hair, skin tissue or urine at crime scenes. Visual images produced from segments of separated DNA from cell nuclei can help police identify crime suspects.

A biotechnologist can do anything from working to produce scientific materials(such as chemicals, specimens, etc.) and instruments to helping teach courses in colleges to research such as for medical(recombinant Insulin), agriculture(frost resistant strawberries and Round-Up Ready Soybeans), etc.

Biotechnology is such a broad field today. As a biotechnologist, you can work in just about any type of research and industry you want.
A Biotechnologist with a BS degree(such as in Biochemistry or Microbiology) can work as a technician or biotechnologist who runs and monitors experiments. Getting higher degrees allows you to have more freedom. A PhD allows you to be a research scientist, so you would determine what experiments a technician does.

White Biotechnologists - Deal with industrial uses like designing organisms to manufacture chemicals

Green Biotechnologists - Deal with farming and agriculture. Things like producing crops that are modified to resist disease
