I've also heard it's for flies. The light passing through the water and reflecting of the penny is supposed to fool the bugs and scaring them away. Don't know if that works though...

It's not a superstition. That's done to scare the flies away.

Maybe it means somehow, that an enemy is gonna get a bag of water over his head? A spell of protection?

it is not supersitious and nothing to do with religion it is like beliveing in something that can bring u wealth and money and good luck in your house
