There are many factors that determine the life of a mattress, but with proper care, a quality mattress should last about 10 years. But, remember, as with everything, you get what you pay for. I bought a mattress from IKEA that only cost $80 and it lasted me less than 2 years.

It also depends on the weight of the sleeper. A heavier adult will wear out a mattress much more quickly than a child or lightweight person.

Most manufacturers or retailers include a warranty when you buy a new mattress. The warranty is a good indicator of the quality of the mattress. Warranties range from 1 to 20 years usually. A decent mattress should have at least a 10 year warranty. I wouldn't look at anything below that for adult use or teen of substantial weight. You may just end up replacing it much sooner than you planned.

If you look at the best brand names such as Sealy, Serta, Simmons and others, they have some good quality mattresses that come with a 20 year warranty.

I just went to a sleep lab and learned all about sleeping and mattresses. 8-10 years is the average life of a spring mattress. Quality will determine if it would be less or more. Rarely do spring mattresses last longer than 12-15 years. Other types of mattresses, such as foam latex can last 10-20 years, and sleep numbers have a warranty of 20 years. Hope this helps!

A good quality mattress should last 8-10 years or whenever you get too tall for it (if you're still growing).
