OK, my boyfriend and I are having a debate here, we got into conversation about when Ellen told on TV that Anne Heche was her g/f. My b/f says Anne was on the rise, with the movie Volcano and all, and that Ellen outed Anne and ruined Anne's career. I said that while I don't agree that Ellen should have said anything without Anne's permission....ppl finding out about Anne & Ellen's relationship was part of the price that famous people pay....if you are going to be a big star you have to accept that your personal life is of interest to the public and though I can't say it is right, (because I think that ALL people deserve thier privacy) the reality of the matter is...Famous people are on display...and there is a price to pay to be famous. My b/f thinks I am saying Anne deserved to have her career ruined, I am NOT saying that...I am simply saying, she paid the price. My b/f disagrees with me totally, he says famous people should have as much privacy as we do....who do you agree with?

Oooh, I do love a good debate! I personally think that (like many others have said or implied) celebrities give up a lot of their privacy when they enter the business. Think about it. If Person X wasn't percieved by the public as good looking, talented, down-to-earth et cetera then their movies wouldn't do so well. Some people in "B grade" movies are just as talented etc as those celebrities but their movies don't sell anywhere near as good as the celeb's movies do... because the celeb's are in the public eye. People feel like they can relate to Person X.

They were dating publicly anyway so Ellen did NOT ruin her career. Actually if anything, she gave Anne's career a jump-start (albiet a short one). Everyone wanted to go see the movie with "Ellen's new gf" in it so it was Ellen that gave her the fame, not took it away. Anne isn't ultra talented anyway so it's no huge surprise that her fame was shortlived and that the only thing she's remembered for now is being Ellen's ex.

In an ideal world the celebrities would get as much privacy as anyone else but this isn't an ideal world. Celebrities get paid handsomely for giving up their privacy, playing it up for the media and everything that comes with it. They knew that before they signed that $10 million movie contract.

For the record, I'm with you on this one.

I think that it was Anne that ruined her own career - I think a lot of that did have to do with Ellen but I'm not saying it is because of that. Much like you are saying. It is true that these celebrities do pay the price for their fame but the point is that they are in the public eye it is going to get out.

I am totally on your side. I don't think that you are saying that Anne stuffed up her career by being with Ellen. I don't know where Anne came out of the closet from. I have always thought that she started going out with Ellen to further her career but ruined it really. Especially when she went back to the straight world and Ellen soldiered on.

Ellen didnt OUT her, she was dating her publicly, and a good case could be made that she was using Ellen to advance her career.

Careers in Hollywood come and go quickly, hers went not because of Ellen but because she had her time in the sun.

Being in the public eye is part of the price you pay for celebrity, whether you are a star for a year, or 50, but on the upside you are paid very well.

Famous people give up their privacy when they make movies. If they don't like it, they can simply leave the business. Its very simple. So you're right about that one. As far as ruining her career - I think all the press actually gave Anne Heche a chance at fame that she never would have otherwise had. That Harrison Ford movie she was in...that movie would have BOMBED if it weren't for the sudden frenzy over her lesbian relationship.

Ellen all the way. And anyway, Anne went back straight. She was just in it for the publicity.

Celebrities should have privacy in some matters of their personal lives, specifically those that they make the attempt to keep personal and don't put out into the public. If they go grocery shopping, out to a restaurant, or to the mailbox for instance, then they have placed themselves out in the public, so their privacy is forfeit. If they are taking a dump in their house or are at the doctor's, then these are private settings so their privacy should be secured.

Since celebrities have placed themselves into the public eye of their own accord, then they have forfeited the right to have their lives kept private when they are out in the public.

Anne wanted publicity. Didn't she go back to men?

I agree with you, definitely. And frankly, I think Ann's career died of natural causes... I don;t find her talent all that spectacular, sorry.
