It's not 31%.

According to the Bureau of Census, Asian persons comprise 4.2% of theUS population. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html

You can look at the data by state, county and cities as well in theUSA Quickfacts from Census. In California for example the percentage of Asian population is 12.1% but a higher 15.5% in Orange County http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/06059.html

The Current Population Survey has detailed statistics on the Asians Population, with 2004 data http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/race/api.html

I googled this because I was also curious and according to the population consensus of 2000 the Asian population is at 31%. That was six years ago and I couldn't find anything more recent than that but I am sure that it has increased since then.

As for me, my husband immigrated from Asia and also our daughter is part Asian. So I know it has at least increased by two people, hehe.

You also have to keep in mind that there are several Asian countries on the globe and it is logical that the % would be about this high or more. (That includes China, Japan, Korea, India, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sir Lanka, etc etc.)
