Dear American friends. How do different laws in different states affect your lives ? For example, if gay marriagr was legal in Texas and not in Florida.
How would relationships be affected if you moved from one state to another ?

Gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts, but not in other states (although Vermont has civil unions). If a couple married in Massachusetts moved to another state, the marriage would not be recognized at all. For those married in Massachusetts, they are only recognized as married in Massachusetts and not at the federal level of government (and do not receive the same federal tax benefits or legal protections as opposite-sex married couples).

I don't think it would so much affect the relationship, seems like it would affect the state more...if they are trying to get rid of gay ppl more people are gon' go to that state to be able to marry and probably stay there so their marriage can be valid. I'm confused too...i think gay marriage should be allowed anywhere they have the right to persue happiness and if that makes them happy let them be.

It's already outlawed in Texas...Texas is big on the anti-gay bandwagon. It means that your marriage is legal only in a state where gay marriage is recognized. That's a whole one state currently.

At least if you went to Canada, you could legally marry as a same-sex couple. But when you return to the US, that marriage is illegal and void. If you're a straight couple, it's then acceptable. Now how unfair is that?

It wouldn't affect me any. If I wanted to get married, I would just go to a state where it was legal and get married and go back home.=]

if one state allows gay marriage, alot of the gay couples would move to that state and it would get crowded, and the other states that they have moved from would lose valuable people such as doctors, lawyers, nurses, firemen, etc.
