has she registered for anything yet? You really can't go wrong with blankets, bathing supplies, or gender neutral clothes.

Hello. This is great news! There are so many things I can suggest. We had recieved numerous beautiful gifts when our son was born. Some of the gifts were useful some less. We, however found out that the best gift for us was a beautiful diaper cake by Bloomers. Not only was it gorgeous, but also very practical and saved us the hassle of shopping for diapers the first week. You might want to consider also giving a skin care gift for a young mom - after all, pregnancy isnt an easy thing to go through. My wife loved a Basq gift set that she recieved at her baby shower. I can recommend a nice site which has everything you need http://www.SpiffyBaby.com. They'll deliver to your friends door. You will not regret it.

Absolutely a gift card, and something practical, like Target or Walmart because she can pick out what she wants or even get diapers or formula. If she's only 17 she more than likely needs the finances.
Don't forget, she needs things for herself too. Maternity outfits and undies, and its best if she picks this out herself.
With Doctor approval, a pre- or post natal massage or facial treatment or appointment for her hair is a super idea, especially since feeling of depression and unattractiveness seem to be a huge but silent lonely part of being pregnant.

Your friend is very young, and is going to need a lot of help. I know cute outfits are fun to shop for, but they are not very practical and most babies end up wearing onesies and sleepers for the first several months.
I would get her things like diapers or wipes. You can have them sent to her using http://www.1800diapers.com
If you buy clothes get the basics... onsies, sleepers & socks (not the newborn kind cause they never fit or stay on). There are a ton of baby care products that are small but vital such as a thermometer, vaseline (for a boy), tylenol drops, gripe water or other anti gas, aquaphor (great for diaper rash & dry baby skin), baby wash, washcloths, nasal aspirator, burp cloths (soft cloth diapers are great).
Another great and practical gift is to get her meals from someplace. There are places like dinners ready or my girlfriends kitchen where you can go make a bunch of homemade meals for her to freeze and use during those first few crazy weeks.
You might also want to plan a pampering day for mom. Arrange to go out to lunch and get a pedicure!

Gift cards are great, but sometimes you want to send a treat. Check if she's having a shower, and what she got if she did. A bouncy seat for newborns is mandatory-one that vibrates. The Fisher-Price Aquarium for the crib lulled both our daughters to sleep like a dream. Old Navy has lovely "Birth Day" matching pj sets for mama and baby in neutral, cute colors. They also have great, special newborn stuff and gift-wrap service, too(I think). Good luck and aloha...

Well if you don’t want to wait till you know the gender to get her something. You can buy her a cute outfit in neutral color and put a nice gift card with it to a place that she go shopping and get something she needs. There is always the basic things, bottles, binki, blankets, clothes, diapers, that type of thing but if you want to get something bigger but not pay for the cost of shipping go for the gift card. Just get a little something to put with it, even if it is a stuff bear.

PAMPERS!!! That is what is needed the most, and what will be the most important thing the baby needs. She have up to 12 months for clothes and etc, and pampers too, but she can wash the clothes and re-use them, while in the other hand how prices are rising that is what is will be needing for a real good while.

either a play-pen or a bouncer. They would be "fed-ex-able" if you leave them in the box. The play-pen was the only thing i didn't get, but wanted, at BOTH of my baby showers... i was 17 too. Or if she doesnt have a carseat yet, that would be the BEST thing... or even if she does have one it would be great! you can never have too many of those (especially if you have two cars, or your boyfriend leaves in your car and you have an emergency, ya know) lol
i hope i helped!!
play pen-around $50
Car seat- $50
Bouncer- as low as $19.95.. i think.. lol

a gift certificate to a baby store near her or food store where she can get diapers bottles formula etc... You never get everything you need and it nice to pick out what you want being that you wont have a lot of money to spend because of the baby.

Hmm. things that were useful to us were.... bebe pod chair (you can order them online at Target or Wal-Mart), the Leap Start Learning Table- that was great- we'd have our son in the bebe pod chair, with that table- but we took 2 legs off the table so he could play with it while sitting down... then when he was out of the chair, we put all the legs on it, and it actually helped him to stand up on his own!!! It's great! Those are just a couple of things that I'm so glad we had.

She'll probably get lots of sleepers and blankets, but go for something practical... a gift certificate to a store so she can get what she needs after the baby shower (there are always things you forget) is usually perfect for first-timers.
