You are right. The character of Freddy Kruger has been around for quite awhile. It could have been in the 50's because my mom recalls a similar character. Robert Englund(the actor who plays Freddy),however started his acting career doing the classics like Shakespeare but couldn't make any serious money doing that so he started doing those Nightmare on Elm Street movies in the 80's. He was in the Mangler and in that short lived sci-fi show V .

To clear this up now, the original film Freddy starred in was called A Nightmare on Elm Street, and was made in 1984. This was the first time that the character Freddy Krueger had been featured or mentioned in. Since then there have been 8 sequels (check my sources), all of which starring Freddy.

Wes Craven's idea of Freddy came from a news article he read about children so afraid to go to sleep (because of horrible nightmares) that they resorted to cutting they're eyelids off.

If you are interested there was also a show called Freddy's Nightmares. There are VHS Tapes available on eBay, and 3 episodes on DVD were released in the UK.

Nightmare On Elm Street is the first Freddy movie in 1984. There's no way a 1930's movie would have anything like Freddy.

I think he's only been around since his first appearance in Friday the 13th movie in 1984.
His life span was from 1940-1968 though.
