I think it is an incredible book. If you look at when the book is written and them read it, it is amazing how many similar things are unrolling now before our eyes in our reality.
Really, it is an important book, because it shows what can happen to our society. Yes it may seem a bit far fetched with big brother, but if you think about it and see things symbolically or even just a little loosely, there are some real correlations between the book and today's society.

Another great book is "The Handmaids Tale" by Margaret Atwood (don`t see the movie first or it will turn you off the book). There are many correlations in that book and the way society is going today. Really amazing.

I like these type books that make you think and reflect.

Enjoy the rest of the book!

Big Brother is watching you! : )

it's quite a good book especially since 1984 was something in my future 22 years ago and now it's 22 years in the past. I have two points of comparison with regard to what is and what was. try V for vendetta to see if you also enjoy books of these types.

I agree with you and it's a pretty, fantastic book finished in 1948. It's his bold, visionary novel looking ahead of time, I mean from the year he finished it. As far as I know, Orwell simply changed the order of the year, that is, 1948 to 1984 so that it looked like something which depicted further unimaginable future of mankind in the world of robot-like human beings under the control of absolute power and 'Big Brother'.

It is wonderful and beautiful and creepy and perfect. It should be the patriotic duty of every American to read it. Amazing how something written almost sixty years ago now fits to a pin to exactly what is happening in this day and age, in this governmental rut that we've run into.

Definitely one of the highest and best written books I have ever read. And yet, for the deep thinker, it is very scary. Drawn any paralells yet to our society? There are too many for comfort.

Plot Overview

Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. Currently, the Party is forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes. More…..

It really depressed me when I had to read it my senior year in high school; but, I think the beautiful thing about G.O.'s book is that as long as his book is kept on the curriculum and discussed, then the types of things that happen in the book can never truly happen in reality. In that way, the man brushed a stroke of genius.
