1. You need a model of your idea. In order to have a model, you need someone to mock it up on AutoCAD software. If the idea has high tolerances (i.e. it doesn't matter if the model is a bit rough, like a plastic toy soldier), then you can create it yourself out of clay and then create your own molds out of plaster.
2. The second step is to take your AutoCAD model and take it to a plastic injection molding company. There, they will take your model, create the mold and then start injecting the plastic of your choice for your product.
All in, this should cost about $10,000 depending on the number of units you need, quality etc. The do-it-yourself product can be done for about $100. There are some websites that have automated fabs that do this with their own AutoCAD. The upside is that it is much more affordable, but the downside is that unit-cost is very high and you have to learn a proprietary autoCAD program. I don't rememer the website (but I read it on Wired Magazine).
