The President said today that he decided to replace Don a week ago but continued to claim to support him so as not to influence the outcome of the elections.
This was both a lie (lying to the public) and a major blunder on Bush's side. If he had canned Rummy a week before the elections Republicans might have been able to save some of the seats they lost yesterday.

Yup he was fired. I heard it once on a station then after that the same station and all the other stations I saw including the internet all said he resigned.
I'm pretty sure he was fired but can't exactly say so.

Actually, he supposedly resigned. Which means that he quit. Why would he announce that for himself? He hangs on to the skirt tails of the presidents he serves.

He was fired! You don't really believe HE decided to step down, do you? They said he "resigned" so that he could save face and leave with dignity. This happens in the business world all the time. People are allowed to "resign" so that they don't have to tell their next employers they were fired...it's not as if it's their "choice."
