It's the door to the cell with a doorman in charge.

The cell membrane lets good things in, it keeps the bad things out, and it expels the waste. Just like a good doorman would.

The doors are the permeable points on the cell membrane and the doorman sits inside the nucleus so he can control all the various doors.

When a bacterium attacks it wages war on the cell and fights from the outside trying to break the cell membrane and storm the doors.

When a virus attacks the cell the virus sendsa few of its agents inside, they knock out the doorman and allow more of the virus code in. Once enough of these agents get inside they hijack the nucleus and later the entire cell.

a cell membrane is like a jello ring. it is flexable, things can pass through it either by force (active transport) or without any additonal force (passive transport)
