I have a 96 sunfire that needs a new fuel pump. I've looked in all the manuals and they tell me to remove my gas tank to get access to my fuel pump. But I can't get the tank off! The bolts that hold the retaining straps are rusted on and they will not budge. It looks like on the front side of the tank there are some clips that might be easier anyway. Please help me if you know how to do this. Thank you

Easy to get off... Hold a match near the filler and it will literally blow off!

Note to pinheads: I was just kidding. Do not attempt this at home. Your mileage will vary. Offer not valid in Tennessee.

i change these tanks all the time so here we go first GET THE PENETRATING FLUID spray into those little holes were the straps bolt up to soak the threads of the bolts. then spray your fuel line connections. undo the fillerneck clamps now try to take the two strap bolts out without snaping the threaded clips if you break the clips and the bolts turn with the clips you will have to cut the bolts to get the straps off.disconnect the 3 fuel lines it's easier to leave the fuel filter attached to the plastic pressure line and unthread it on the other side (if you are changing the pump you should change the filter to) the return line requires a special tool to disconnect it. then the emmisions line you pinch the clip and pull the line apart. unplug the wire drop the tank change the unit and put it back together. hope this helps.

#1 make sure the gas tank is EMPTY (or near).. otherwise its going to be heavy as HELL.

#2 WD40 or Liquid Wrench will help with the rusted bolts unless they are stripped from the battle.

Best suggestions I can give you.

i own a repair shop, and you have to remove the bolts from it, the clips stay there don't try to remove them, you,ll have to soak them with some penetrating oil and let them soak for a while to get them off ,try not to break them if possible ,you,ll need them later to put it back on with, but this is how it comes off,i hope you drained all the gas you could from it,,because it going to be hard to handle if you didn't,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.
