I am attempting to connect a CAT5E crossover cable between my Win 98 PC and my Win 2000 Pro Laptop. I really have no clue how to configure this between the two computers, so a step by step explanation would be greatly appreciated!

FIRST LEFT CLICK ON MY COMPUTER AND GO TO PROPERTIES LEFT CLICK ON NETWORK IDENTIFICATION CLICK ON PROPERTIES DOWN AT THE BOTTOM HIGHLIGHT WORKGROUP IN THE BOX TYPE SOMETHING LIKE WORKGROUP1 OR SOMETHING WITHIN THOSE LINES CLICK OK. DO THIS ON BOTH MACHINES AND HOOK CABLE BETWEEN THEM THEN GO TO MY NETWORK PLACES ON THE MACHINE YOU ARE TRANSFERRING FROM AND COPY TO THE OTHER COMPUTER ALL THE FILES YOU WANT TRANSFER ED. BUT KEEP IN MIND SOME WILL NOT TRANSFER PROPERLY WINDOWS 98 IS FAT 32 FILE SYSTEM AND 2000 PRO IS NTFS. BOTH MACHINES WILL MAKE YOU REBOOT AFTER YOU NAME YOUR NETWORK.

First, you need a cable to connect them. A crossover cable, as you stated. Do you have one? You can tell by looking at the connectors, where the wires are fed in. If green and orange are reversed on one end, it's a crossover. Once they are connected to eachother, you should just need to make sure they both have similar network settings and connect them. You may need to program in a static ip (something in the 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255 range) just to make communication easier. If you put one number in one, one in the other, then you will know the ip that has been assigned to communicate between them.

Below in resources is the Ethernet crossover cable pin layout for you. When you hook it up, make sure to edit both PCs network settings and give both PCs static IP addresses on the same subnet (such as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0) and set them up to be in the same workgroup. Then browse to My Network Places and give it a refresh or two. Good luck!
