During Nixon's administration, Rep. VP Agnew was caught cheating on his taxes by the IRS. He resigned his office. Nixon then appointed Gerald Ford to take his place. When the Watergate burglary investigation was implicating Pres. Nixon, Nixon resigned and Rep. VP Gerald Ford became President, appointing Rockefeller to the VP opening. The U.S. then had a President AND Vice President that was never elected by the people. Ford gave Nixon immunity from prosecution for any crimes he may have committed while in office.
Now give me all those thumbs down..........I love em'.
This set a double standard of justice in our country. While ordinary citizens were being prosecuted and jailed for far lesser crimes, President Nixon received the so called "Get out of jail free" card. It defied the U.S. Constitutional Bill of Rights concerning "equal justice".

The former VP chooses a new VP (as Ford did when he replaced Nixon).
The Speaker only becomes President in the event of both the President and VP dying or becoming incapacitated simultaneously.

The VP assumes the office of President and a new VP is appointed much as a cabinet member is appointed. I.E. the appointment must be approved by the Senate.

If something happens with the vice chairman - the Pres NOMINATES a sparkling vice chairman. If the Pres is incapacitated or faraway from place of work, the vice chairman takes over and NOMINATES a sparkling vice chairman. those nominations would desire to be authorized via Congress. This occurred with Nixon while Spiro Agnew end throughout Watergate. Nixon nominated Gerald Ford and while Nixon end, Ford grew to grow to be the hot President - without ever having been elected to the place of work. He then nominated Nelson Rockafeller as his vice chairman.
