A "water pill" is a layperson's term for a diuretic, a drug that increases urine output and helps to remove excess fluid from the body. Lasix or furosemide is one of the most common ones but there are many types. Some may require taking extra potassium and others are potassium sparing so if you don't know, ask.
Water pills are commonly used to treat edema or swelling, certain heart conditions, and other fluid problems. Some common things are diuretic, like caffeine and alcohol. That's why for example a beer drinker needs to urinate so much. And it's why caffeinated drinks aren't very good to prevent dehydration.

It is a diauretic. It is used to get rid of excess water in the body. Usually for health reasons such as high blood pressure or congsetive heart faiure, things like that. They remove excess water but they also remove certain nutrients and anyone taking water pills should be taking or eating foods with potassium . Potassium is leached out and can cause problems too. Potassium is in banannas, potatoes (near the skin part) broccoli and other veggies.
A natural diauretic is parsley. Another way to not retain fluid is to lay off salt and refined foods such as bologna, chips, hot dogs, soda, alcohol, or anything that's high in sodium or nitrates.
