I was told that I should schedule a preconception appointment with my gyno before I begin trying to conceive. She said no exam was needed but that I could come in for counseling if I had questions. Can anyone tell me what their gyno had to say in such a visit? I know the basics, like getting my folic acid, no caffeine, alcohol, etc. Is there anything else I should know? And does anyone happen to know why doctors prefer that you wait three months after coming off the pill before actually trying to conceive?

preconception visit deals with things like healthy eating and dietetic counseling and dealing with weight issues. the doctor can also explain your cycle to you and when you will be fertile.

you should not become pregnant within at least 3 months of stopping the pill because the pill depletes folate levels.

If you have a normal BMI, are taking a regular multi vitamin, know you shouldn't eat an extra 300 calories until you are in your second trimester (and are eating healthy now), and know how to chart your cycle (and use alternate birth control until at least three months have passed after stopping the pill), I can think of no good reason to schedule a preconception visit.

I know why you should wait the 3 months, but not the rest, since I was very fertile. The pill takes about a month to totally leave your body, and you need another little while for your cycle to get back to normal. Did you kno that sometime focusing on getting pregnant can actually cause sterility? Often when people who seem to be infirtile but can't seem to conceive, finally, after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars give up and try adoption, they get pregnant, So don't put too much pressure on getting pregnant

I've never even heard that such appointments exist. Fortunately, I've had no problems getting pregnant, even after stopping bc. In fact, I'm a bit too fertile. It seems all my hubby has to do is pat me on the head and I get pregnant! I don't think I'd waste my time going to an appointment like that.

Oh, one thing I would think you might consider is if you are going to have an amnio or any other genetic testing and what you will do if something comes out bad.

Anyways, good luck on getting pregnant!
