Because people don't necessarily have the same belief system as the Democrats or the Republicans. In actuality, we are one of the few countries where third parties do not play a significant role in the government.

Any alternative to two parties. But they usually take votes away from one of the two main parties. Like in 1992, Clinton won with only 44% of the vote because Ross Perot ran as an independent and took more votres away from George Bush Sr. then from Clinton. That's the downside, a person can become President with less then half of the people voting for him.

Because if you think about it they decide what happens in out country because republicans will vote for republicans and democrats will vote for democrats. Third parties (i'm mostly relating to Independents) go with the party and those in that party that will go best our current agenda.

Third parties are parties that have different beliefs outside of Democrat and Republican. For example, unlike Democrats and Republicans, Libertians beleive the government should be small and let American citizens handle their life their own way.
