i own a repair shop, and one good indication is to look at the fluid in it ,,if it smells burned or is a brownish color that is a good sign it may be going to give some trouble, also any unusual noises from it ,is a good indication of problems also, they way it shifts can also be a sign of one going bad, any of these signs might mean you have a transmission problem,,,good luck, i hope this help,s.

the car wouldn't move in gear or it might not shift properly. A lot of problems in an automatic are related to not enough fluid in the transmission, check the fluid level.

Our truck wouldn't shift gears ... we'd be driving down the street going 30 mph and we'd still be in first gear. It was obvious that something was wrong. In my mom's case, when she put her car in reverse it would ... lurch? It did it a few times before we realized there was something wrong. In both cases, they needed transmission work. Find someone reliable wherever you live ... and unless it's under warranty, a small shop is usually a cheaper route than the dealership.

If it's automatic, you can tell by the gears not shifting as smoothly as they did before, the clutch is going out. On a manual same thing but as you shift between gears the gears don't catch as smoothly as you press the gas pedal. You will know.

if it takes too long to engage when you put it in drive, and check the fluid,is it brown,if so then change the oil and filter in your tranny.does it slip and how does it change gears while your driving.if i were you,i would first change the oil and filter, and see if that solves your problem, and also how full is it on tranny oil?
