Ok so this is kinda complicated. I'm 19 years old and I still haven't graduated High school...yes I know this is a bad thing but I had a lot of family problems that pushed me to drop out of high school. I am planning to go back to get my diploma. I recently applied for a job that requires a high school diploma but I lied on my resume that I graduated in London, England, is there really a way for them to find out that I didn't graduate at all? and if so what are the consequences if any?

I forgot to add that I live in the United States...will they REALLY call London, England just to find out?

That would show on a $50 background check. Some businesses do them, some don't. If they don't you might get away with it, but it would be out there.

If they ever decided they didn't want you, they could back check things and have an immediate reason to fire you with cause. I have seen that happen twice.

Although you may not realise it, a lie on your resume can make the honest information look false, something which will decrease your personal integrity in the eyes of the employer. Recruiters often employ the services of third parties to check the validity of the information given on resumes.
There are other reasons why you should not lie on your resume. In general always say the truth or be prepated to get caught.

I admire your enthusiasm but unfortunately any lie, for me, will come back one day and somehow bite you on the butt.

I would think any potential employee will check references and your background so naturally they would contact the London educational institute you have listed on your resume. This is where you may slip up and ultimately lead to an unsuccessful job application.

I wish you well!

Of course they can find out-- quite easily, in fact. Don't lie. You're just asking for trouble.

Depends what you lie about. If it is something that can be checked out, they may find out.
If they find out, they may fire you...
