A shih-tzu!! They are the best--great apartment dogs, small enough for the lap, and they don't bark or yip like most small dogs. They are very intelligent, loyal and loving. Bonus, they don't shed. I have one and he's the best dog! I highly recommend them.

Surprisingly, I've heard many people say that poodles, not the toy variety, are excellent pets. Very good demeanors, and very little shedding. Not really a small dog, but not a big dog either. With proper discipline, keeping the dog from being overly vocal shouldn't be an issue. Many smaller dogs are high strung, thus the barking and yiping.

Yes, yes, yes. A Miniature Pincher, I've had 2...lost the first one in a divorce. I now have a female "min pin". They aren't yappers like a lot of small dogs and almost no shedding. That is the reason I picked a min pin in the first place cuz I can't handle the hair, They are very playful, loyal and very easy to paper or house train.
E-mail me if you have any further questions.

Try http://www.petfinder.com and go to "Shelters and Rescue Groups" in the upper right. Going through a rescue group that fosters their dogs in home environments will make it easier for you to find a dog whose behavior is already known - whether it's a barker or not, whether it gets along with cats in general, etc.
Here are a list of "Toy Breeds" (as recognized by the AKC) who would be lap-dog sized:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/toy_group.cfm
Recommendations:
Maltese
Shih Tzu
Lhasa Apso
Havanese
And the ubiquitous "small mixed breed". :)
Good luck!

My favorite is the Bichon Frise!! Other ones that do good and don't bark a lot is the haveneese, shih-tzu, and bologneese
These dogs don't tend to bark a lot, but they can if you dont scold them when they do...
I have an adult Bichon Frise female I would be willing to sell...I bought her for breeding, but DNA testing showed that somewhere in her lineage she wasn't with the same father as she was registered, so I plan to sell her. She is really well trained, and went to obediance classes, and she should have good bloodlines. Let me know if your interested...wyomingirlie16@yahoo.com
Good luck finding the dog you want!

Just about any small breed is a canditate for lap dog..The barking is something you have to train them for. Don't let them get started and it's easier to break.
