I see the price difference obviously but performance wise... is the difference THAT great?

There is a fairly decent performance gain in going with the more expensive one. It is not just because its dual core, but also because it has more cache. I would advise however for a gaming computer that you get a processor with the new AM2 socket instead of the old 939 socket that these two use, this will help in future upgradeability and will allow you to use faster DDR2 memory.

Also, the Core 2 Duos from Intel are currently faster than anythin AMD has to offer, but that is up to you. If you want more info on anything gaming computer related feel free to email me, its in my profile.

the two are twin center processors, the sole huge difference you're finding out to purchase is the greater .1ghz between the two processors. The 4400+ is a somewhat greater cutting-edge technologies processor vs the 4200+, as AMD slowly releases new processors they improve the extensive type sequence, an occasion being the latest released processor is the Athlon sixty 4 X2 6000+ it somewhat is a twin center 3ghz processor using the AM2 socket. whilst given an actual decision like this, regularly going with the greater cutting-edge launch is the proper decision, so i might say the 4400+.

Athlon 64 = SINGLE PROCESSOR
Athlon 64 X2 = Dual Core (2 processors in a single package)

Performance is MUCH greater for applications needing a little bit of extra horsepower. 2 processor are way better than one....max out your memory to get the best performance kick...RAM is cheap!
