Yes, and a change in diet is the first thing to do. Dietary modification and treatment is fundamental to the successful treatment of both Type I and Type II diabetes. The dietary guidelines are especially important to follow for prevention and treatment. All simple, processed, and concentrated carbohydrates must be avoided. Low glycemic load foods should be stressed and saturated fats should be kept to a minimum. Diabetics have a higher incidence of death from cardiovascular disease (60-to-70 percent, versus 20-to-25 percent in people without diabetes).

Weight loss, in particular a significant decrease in body-fat percentage, is a prime objective in treating the majority of Type II diabetics; it improves all aspects of diabetes and may result in cure.

For both Type I and Type II diabetics, there are some specific foods that have been shown to produce positive effects on blood sugar control. These foods include olives, soybeans and other legumes, nuts, artichokes, bitter melon, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, mangoes and onions. These foods all have a low glycemic index and glycemic load and are high in fiber.

Cinnamon may also be helpful in controlling blood sugar levels. According to research, cinnamon might be acting as an insulin substitute in type 2 diabetes. A double-blind study of 60 people with type 2 diabetes revealed a significant decrease in fasting serum glucose (18-29%), triglyceride (23-30%), LDL cholesterol (7-27%), and total cholesterol (12-26%) levels after taking cinnamon for 40 days. The effective dosage was as little as 1 gram per day of cinnamon (roughly ¼ teaspoon).

How do I know if the program is working?

If you have diabetes and utilize nutritional and herbal support, you must monitor blood sugar levels, especially if you are on insulin or have relatively uncontrolled diabetes. Typically insulin and drug dosages will have to be altered after employing natural medicines. Under no circumstances should a person suddenly stop taking insulin or oral diabetic drugs without consulting their physician.

It is important to monitor blood sugar levels because poor blood sugar control dramatically risk of developing the complications of diabetes. The availability of home glucose monitoring kits makes it easier now than in the past to monitor blood sugar levels, resulting in a major improvement in the care of diabetes. Another major improvement is the measurement of the level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1c), which allows monitoring of blood sugar levels over a long period of time. I recommend periodic measurement-every three months in poorly controlled diabetes, and every year in well-controlled cases. If a diabetic can keep their HgbA1c between 6 and 7%, the risk for developing any complication of diabetes is dramatically reduced.

Type 1 or Type 2? If it's 1-that means it is hereditary and her grandparent had it most liikely and she would have had it as a young adult or even as a child. Type 2 which is what I believe it is since she isn't on on insulin, yet is caused from diet and our lifestlye.
The best thing she can do is move. Walk, exercise, swim, dance anything that burns calories. Then she must stop the bad eating habits she has or she will end up on insulin, and that isn't even funny. She can't eat sugar and don't let the newest thing that they say is ok fool you Splenda, no one should eat that. Diabetics for sure shouldn't. She can have sugarless things and maybe a diet soda now and then but not on a daily basis. Water, water and more water. All fruit turns to sugar so, she can have them but not in excess. Also things like potatos and pasta turn into sugar in the body. protien is good. Chicken, tuna, lean red meat and a few nuts and raisind to smnack on. Several small meals a day and not a lot of big meals are better for her, keeps the sugar leveled out and not high and low. Look on the American Diabetes Association website and they will give her the newest info. Probably get a lot of mailed info. for her to keep at home too. Recipes and foods to eat. It really is hard but, this isn't a life sentence unless she allows it to be. Moving and educating herself will keep her healthy. I wish you luck. Love your way too.

There are a great many quack remedies for diabetes being sold as "natural" that are largely ineffective, unregulated and very costly. Your mother or any other diabetic is literally risking their health, their vision, their kidneys, possible amputation and even their very life by taking stuff without a doctor's knowledge and supervision.

There are natural products that some research has found may help control blood sugar, and a wholistic physician may be wiilling to have your mother try supplements like chromium, bitter melon, cinnamon or some others with close monitoring of her blood sugar. Before trying these "natural" products, it is imperative that she be following her diet and exercise plan as closely as possible and that she knows how to test her blood and does so properlly. Losing even 10 pounds may result in much better control, so weight loss may have to be part of the plan as well.

Never stop the "tablets" on your own, or even add a "natural" product on your own! Sugar could go too high or too low with dire consequences!

And the only thing that can cure diabetes currently is a pancreas transplant. Any ad or "doctor" or program promising to do so is lying and not to be trusted.

The Diabetes Association may be able to help you find physicians who use natural drugs as well as the standard ones, and will also list some thinhs you should avoid. But it is simply not safe to experiment on your own with a dangerous disease.

As all have mentioned earlier, your doctor's advice comes first.

But at the same time u can learn from other people's experiences about some natural remedies. there is nothing wrong in it. but be cautious and consult your doctor always.
diseases like diabetes are a result of several factors and it would help to have a holistic view of the problem. it is one the diseases categorised under the set of 'lifestyle diseases' and requires some long term consistent changes in your existing lifestyle. which may be highly sedentary, depending on a lot of artificial and junk food etc.

stress is one of the factors that contributes to this disease.
so try out ways to keep her happy and mentally fit.

walking is a good exercise and helps in keeping diabetes in control. i know more than one persons who have benefitted from taking long distance walks everyday, early morning.

jamun (a seasonal fruit found in India) is considered very good for diabetes. I dont know whether u r from india or outside. but if u can, do try jamun or some other products of jamun. it is also very tasty.

neem is another herb which is often recommended but be careful with it. excess of it is considered carsinogenic (i have heard so but do not have anything to support my claim). in small quantities once in a while it does really help for several other problems like constipation, skin diseases and other bacterial or viral infections. and it may also help in the case of diabetes.

other vegetables which are bitter in taste - bitter gourd for example - is also good.

That is really a loaded questioin. many food effect blood sugar. But none really lower the blood sugar. Some don't raise it that high. Some have little effect, and others will raise it through the roof. As for Wine or guiness, enjoy a glass with a meal. Sugars in Alcohol are processed diffrently then those of sugars found in foods. So While Alcohol products don't tend to raise your blood sugar excess drinking can put in you a coma because it can bring your blood sugar down dangerouslly low if not careful. Best to exercise and eat properly that is the sercret. Harry

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't help with natural products. But, don't quit medication without first getting your blood sugar under control. The best option is to add natural products into the therapy protocol, but watch the blood sugar like a hawk. You don't want it dropping too much - which can happen easily.

Here is an extract from a research research article. I have attached the link to the full article as well.

"The herbal medicine extracted from seeds of the Milk Thistle, Silybum marianum (silymarin) is known to have antioxidant properties and research published this week in Phytotherapy Research shows that this extract can help people significantly lower the amount of sugar bound to haemoglobin in blood, as well as reducing fasting blood sugar levels."
