At my school, the head board has made it a rule that even though they cannot stop gay couples from going to the prom together, they have made it a rule that they have to have parents permision to go to the prom with someone of the same sex, and you can't enter in the school king and queen contest if you're a gay couple. (or in this case, queen and queen) I am the co-president of a gay rights club that meets after school and we are very pissed at this, my best friend suggested the idea that me and her should go in as "friends" but really go as a date, and that she can get a lot of people to vote for us since she is really popular (plus her friend can rig the votes) and when we win we will go up on stage and kiss eachother for a really long time. I'm straight and have a boyfriend and hope to have future boyfriends, plus I've never kissed a girl before, but I REALLY want to support the gay cause, should I do it? I'm seriously gonna do it by what you guys say.

Honey, I am amazed that you would even think to do this at your prom!!! What an awesome gesture...I literally have tears in my eyes. I am touched.

But you don't need to do that. If there's no parental permission for mixed-sex couples, it's pure discrimination. (Some schools have it for all couples because girls want to bring their 20-year-old boyfriends.) Also, if you're 18, you don't need parental permission anyway, I believe.

You've got time before the prom. There are groups that will be VERY interested. GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Educators' Network) is one; Lambda Legal is another. Please get in touch with them first. Also, your group can circulate a petition or protest, if the environment is safe enough, and if any of you have supportive parents, do get them involved.

And get in touch with your local media!!!

That rule from the school is very discriminatory. Maybe if you find a gay male couple and gay female couple to go together, you can all walk in at the same time and maybe they won't say anything. You can always group up with your true dates once you're in the door.

I think that rule is illegal. I would encourage all people in the gay rights club to go to the prom and stand up for what is right.

Part of me wants to say yes and hope that kiss starts something for you, and another part of me wants to suggest that you get as many people together as you can and get rid of that rule. That's a horrible rule and needs to be stopped. Bad things can happen, like couples later trying the same thing, getting kicked out, and then having their parents be told about it. Probably the better thing would be to fight for equality instead of mocking their ruling.

StarGirl that is very brave of you and a lot to take on for a non-gay person. Good luck to you if you do it... Be prepared a lot of teachers and parent might get upset. I also think it would be a good idea to discuss with your parents.

No matter what you decide, I send you lots of kudos for supporting us. Thank you! I hope your generation can change our world.

i applaud your wanting to help, but be sure you're prepared for the consequences, academically as well as socially. you could be suspended or ostracised. make sure you talk this over with your parents first, they'll defiantely be called in after the fact.good luck!
