Some people have a nonsense assumption of a subservient role of women in Christianity--nonsense because it often reflects a culturally pervasive role with very ancient roots. The Code of Manu does the supposed Puritan thing and rachetes it up a few notches into the same neighborhood as Islam. Women, children, and slaves, as the code says, are the property of men. Men are of such supreme, almost divine, importance that a widow, as the code says, should never even mention the name of another man as long as she lives. Again, if you ever thought ancient Judeo-Christian male-famale roles were severe, you need to read the Code of Manu.
