Well, I think that there were two main groups, those who truly believed in Hitler's insane beliefs, and those who were just downright scared of him. He had no reservations about putting his own people in the concentration camps if they were caught or even suspected of helping the Jews. I think Hitler's followers really believed that what they were doing was right. He was a horrible man, but he was a good speaker which caused many people to believe in his propaganda. On the other hand, I think there were a lot of people who thought he was full of it, but really didn't say anything because they were fearful.

I know some Germans who were young during the Holocaust and they were not aware of what was going on because of the propaganda so they thought everything was normal. They were pretty shocke to hear the truth years later. Kind of scary hey. Make you wonder what we are not being told now a days.

the morale? the wehrmacht, the german armed forces reported very high morale for much of the war. as far as the morale of the average citizen, it depends, very much, on who you ask. If you were jewish, for example, morale was not really as much a consideration for you as was your ability to survive. And as far as the aryan population was concerned, well mostly they put up with the nonsense, with the butchery, the murder, etc. because the third reich afforded them a relatively peaceful economic and social sphere. At best they were passive onlookers, not perpetrators perhaps, but in the eyes of many historians, accomplices to the crimes of the Nazis.

I have been told by Germans who survived WWII.....both Jews and German citizens......that the morale was lower than owl droppings. Hitler became so paranoid he drove even his own people into a severely depressed state. Absolutely no one was safe from slave labor, execution or torture if Hitler thought they were against him.

It rose to giddy happiness/nationalistic pride and fell to gloomy despair...in the span of 15 years (1933-1945).
