i have a few theories on the whole polar bear thing.
1. the cages that kate + sawyer are in are animal cages, and jack is in an aquarium, so that probably means that they're in an old zoo. the animals must have been let loose or they escaped. but then, if the animals were set free, wouldnt they see more then just one polar bear? and how would it survive in the heat?
2. its an scientific experiment. the people who were first in the "hatch" were running tests on animals or something, and it escaped, or they set it out to attack the survivors. they could have made the animal more vicious or something, and to test it out, they let it loose and waited to see what would happen.
im not really sure. but i guess we'll find out later on. im also a little confused about that black smoke. but again, im sure we'll find out later.

All I can guess is that this island is man-made and is used for experimental purposes... and for some odd reason polar bears were put there from Antartica. Maybe it was to monitor how polar bears adapt to a warmer clime.
Well LOST is all about the questions; for every answer that comes by, several questions pop up in turn!! So do be patient.. someday you'll find out the exact answer :)

It got there the same way everyone else did, buy happen stance and by accident. But - if you think of it, the whole mystery has something to do with magnetic force. Well polar bears come from the poles which have the most magnetic energy of anywhere else on earth, so why wouldn't that have something to do with it. Also, do you remember the end of last year, the artic observation post was listening for 'something' well - again.. artic and polar bears have a linkage. So, I think it has something to do with that.

Well, for the diehard fans of "Lost," the polar bears are a part of the huge backstory of the Hanso Foundation/DHARMA Initiative. The polar bear was part of DHARMA's experiments on animal aggression, gene therapy, climate change, etc.
There is so much beyond what is on the show. You have much to learn, padawan. Lostpedia might help.

The cages they're keeping Kate and Sawyer in are animal cages from a zoo. Apparently the animals were let loose or got loose.
