I have been using LIDL supermarkets for some years now and am amazed at how cheap they can be. What I don't understand is how some people feel it a 'social gaffe' to shop where you go simply to have a cheap shop? Okay, the range can be limited but it has most things and frankly I think the quality can be excellent although you have to pick and choose. Okay, presentation can be less glamourous than other supermarkets but why not if the prices are always low? What is wrong with shopping cheaply ...... or should I join the snobs and shop where it is simply nicer and more socially acceptable ??

Oh, I am not poor but do have an aversion to putting £££££ into Tescos' coffers when they are already brimming over with profit ..... think about it ....

Lidl does have some good stuff even though they are so cheap. Personally, I hate shopping there. I am not too sure why, maybe it's more to do with the stigma attached to it. But the people I see shopping at my local store seem quite decent AND when I get home loaded with groceries I could not be more pleased with all the good stuff I got.

In the major supermarkets you basically pay for the brand name, glossy image, the advertising budget and then some more on the mainstream product brands.

I say shop cheap if you can also shop well. People will always be superficial and bent on keeping up appearances, but until you lose the right to decide how to spend your money, it is up to you really. Do you want to buy the products or the products plus a premium for empty gloss?

Aldi Last week - 39 pence for very fresh enormous heads of broccoli, 39 pence for a bag of new potatoes, 39 pence for a large bag of carrots, 39 pence for a sweetheart cabbage. Their freezer range changes with the Season with plenty of BBQ choices in the summer. Good cheese selection, and fresh meats. Their smoked salmon as good as anybodys. I always buy Aldi's maple and pecan crunchy oat cereal and use that as a base for chopped crystalised fruits and nuts from Julian Graves; very yummy! A good selection of booze items - even things like Limoncella which one of our favourites. Lidl - do special runs on veges about once a month, when most are half normal prices; their breads are like Aldi, good value, love their espresso coffee. Their bottles of orange juice with bits are especially good and so cheap. Go to our big Morrisons for fresh fish and just out of the oven rolls, and, when I get the opportunity and have some money to spend, love Waitrose, but you can spend a fortune in there. It's almost a place for a "birthday treat shop"! Give Aldi or Lidl a try - some are better managed than others.

Yes I do shop at Lidl and Aldi, nothing wrong with their stuff and I think if you had the time to watch the sort of people who shop at Lidl on a daily basis you would see that there are a lot of snobs who do shop there themselves, there the ones who take their trolley back to their car and load it into Sainsburys and Marks and Spencer's carrier bags they have stored in their car boot, they do that so their snobby neighbours think their loaded and do all their shopping at the alleged posh stores, talk about pathetic, lets face it beans and potato's are the same no matter were you buy them..

My parents used to shop in LIDL and they used to feed 5 adults a week on about 40-50 quid a week! There is nothing wrong with shopping there and they used to sell the yummiest cheese and onion pasties. Haven't been there for a while but do they still sell tins of baked beans for about 7p? A smart man will not spend money unnecessarily - especially on food! I think people who always do their food shopping in fancy posh places are snobs and I also think they are a little dumb. Just because you have money, it doesn't mean you have to spend it.

Agree. This might be a purely English approach to shopping. I have found that Lidl stuff can be superior, but would never tell anybody for fear that it might be seem unacceptable. You pay through the nose to shop at the nicer stores.

Hell yeah. F**k Tescos! Have you tried any of the Lidl beers? Not bad at all. Don't listen to all these "oh I do my shopping at M&S" a**holes. At least Lidl's don't have to put the bakery aroma through their shop fans to get people to buy food (M&S). Tesco's treat their stall like slaves and then try to come up with a way to let them go. Eg them self service checkouts. Nasty people!

This isn't meant as an insult. Just a laugh. But it is based on true events.

My gf won't shop in LIDL because, in her own words, "Everyone's poor and stinks of piss"

Its a great shop.

I have recently bought some Limoncino - alcoholic lemon drink.
Ice tea - ordinary lemon, mango, and lychee.
A nice little spot lamp
Tins of veg or fresh veg.
And some nice German cakes.

There's always something tempting....
