JULIAN MAY. Author of "The Many Colored Land" and its numerous sequels.
It is the first instalment of the most wonderful, exciting and remorselessly detailed yet dynamic and plot-driven series of science fiction novels I have ever read.
After reading Julian May's novels, I have found it impossible to read another science fiction book again and truly enjoy it. May really is the final word in satisfying science fiction.
Do yourself a favour; read her very first, The Many Coloured Land. You will not regret it.

Good question, but you don't go far enough with it. What types of books do you like to read? What genres? I have read well over 565,000 books in my life and am only slowing down a little. I cannot say that I can truthfull call any one author the best. However, the best book I think I have ever read is for/if the world goes down the tubes. A non-fiction book entitled The Way Things Work vols I & II. It teaches you how to make machines and other things to start civilization to be reborn.

I guess that depends on my mood at the time I am asked that question. I too love to read. One of my very favorite books is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. I loved Louis L'Amour's The Last of The Breed. Tokien's The Lord of The Rings is a favorite.
On a lighter note I recenty reread for about the fifth time Where the Red Fern Grows, Ole' Yeller, and The Yearling.
And when the mood strikes me I can read The Bible for days at a time and never get tired of it.

I can't narrow it down any more then this...
Map Of Bones, by James Rollins.
The Crytponomicron, or Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson.
Neverwhere, or American Gods, by Neil Gaiman.
Mind Hacks, by Tom Stafford and Matt Webb.
Night Watch, Thief Of Time, or Jingo, by Terry Pratchett.
The Ingenuity Gap, by Thomas Homer Dixon.
The Hobbit, or the L.O.T.R. series, by Tolkien.
The Harry Potter series, by Rowlings.
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, by Adams.
Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell.
Velocity, by Dean Koontz.
There is also a book that Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman did together called Good Omens, which was a good read.
They are all good books so, choose one or choose all. Hope you enjoy.
