Could you mean Phosphates (PO4). They are one of the big 3 nutrients used to stimulate plant growth. Fertilizers have Nitrates, Phosphates, and potassium. Phosphates show up in sewage treatment plant discharges and are a contributor to pollution and eutrification (fast plant growth and water body degradation/low oxygen.) A lot of phosphates come from laundry detergent, too.

Spelled Phosphates...depends on what type. Many are used as preservatives in foods (sodium phosphate, etc)
