Really, the items that your vacuum cleaner will allow you to pick up depends upon the vacuum cleaner itself. Some vacuums do not have the power to suck up more than simple dust. I own a Dyson, and I must say, it is the best vacuum cleaner on the market for dry floors. I could probably pick up a bowling ball, if need be. Of course, I only vacuum up dirt, dust, dog hair and the ocassional marble or toy.

The only things I try not to vacuum (besides wet stuff, since I don't have a Shop-Vac) are coins (clackety-clack, afraid it'll crack something or get stuck in the hose part, though it hasn't really done any damage to my vacuum when I've done it by accident) and long stringy things, like shoelaces or ribbons. Those get wound around and around the beater things on the bottom of the vacuum (upright-style, I mean) and sometimes they get stuck and you have to cut them off so the beaters roll around like they're supposed to. Plastic bags aren't great, and fabric sucks (doesn't suck...oh, you know what I mean.)

Other than that, suck away!

Never vacuum up the kids, babies, toys, marbles, house hold items, pets, frogs, snakes, cats, dogs, :)
string, etc.
You can vacuum up dust, dirt, , paper, small lose strings or fibers from the carpet, food, and spilled milk, water, etc if it is a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.
