I was thinking of getting both a turtle and a fish or two for my kids. Can they stay in the same tank or do they need seperate ones?

Turtlea are a lot of work! Be sure you know what you are getting in to. I would suggest a map turtle they stay smaller then red eared sliders. I had both for years. They finally got so big they moved into my sisters Koi pond.

I kept large goldfish- they were originally feeders but got to be larger then the turtles. My turtles became very lazy. They wold much rather have me feed them pellets and worms then try to catch a fish.

Turtles also live a really long time, are really dirty and smell if you don't clean the aquarium FREQUENTLY.

I would suggest a fire belly newt if you want something a little different. They are a lot easier and are not as long of a commitment for kids with constantly changing interests. You can keep little guppies in a terarium with newts. Mudpuppies are really cool too.

Turtles are extremely high maintenance and require allot more care then most species of fish.In the instance of a pond or maximum size tank I might agree on keeping them together. Turtles produce an enormous amount of waste and can cause your fish a great deal of illness along with attacking them. Turtles are territorial. In all honesty I would suggest you not put them together. The reason being most lakes and rivers exceed a 200 gallon limit and a 200 gallon tank is normally the largest you'll find in a person's home.50 gallon is the most popular large tank.
Tank size matters. The reason for filtration systems is waste, the cause of most illness is waste.Keep them separated is good advice

They can stay in the same tank. The two animals co-habitat in nature and can do so in a tank. A turtle is a reptile and breathes air (has lungs), thus will need some place to get out of the water (such as a small island). A fish has gills and must stay in water to survive.

i does no longer threat it with your fish. Turtles are very messy and that i might difficulty with reference to the fish. Turtles additionally choose a place to climb out to bask on something to dry their shell thoroughly out or they could fall ill. For this you'll ought to diminish the water point which will focus the micro organism from the turtle. you will ought to do greater water variations for the fish tank. you will additionally ought to get a greater physically powerful filter out because of the fact turtles are very grimy and maximum filters won't be in a position to deal with that a lot. carry on back filters in all probability won't even artwork. additionally reckoning on the dimensions fish tank you have the turtle will additionally outgrow the tank ensuing in you buying a sparkling tank besides. to no longer point out the turtle might eat the fish. it would possibly no longer regardless of if it would. i might individually bypass with a separate tank i think of it relatively is going to likely be a lot much less stressful to maintain up with. There are various web pages on conserving turtles with fish which you will possibly look at to boot.

I would recommend researching what all you're going to need to house an aquatic turtle in the long run--that is a huge tank for when they're full grown (at least 55 gallons), basking bulbs, UVB lights, basking docks, a high powered filter, calcium supplements, a variety of proteins and veggies, and more to say the least. Here is a website about turtles for more information, but expect to pay ALOT of money to care for them if you don't want them to get sick or die at a young age.
