There's a link below that will tell you everything that you want to know about the original. It was a movie by John Waters before it was a musical. A great cult film. I don't see this remake doing the old one any justice. You should check it out sometime.

Its a remake of an 80's movie starring Ricky Lake. Its a musical about a fat girl who gets to dance on a tv show like dick clarks american bandstand. She becomes really popular and takes the handsome guy away from the snotty girl.
