advantages - it is a very inexpensive sheet good for all kinds of interior construction.
disadvantages - it is extremely moisture sensitive (swells and never comes back when wet. loses all structural integrity) some people are very sensitive to the glues and chemicals it is made from. also it is ugly - it needs to be covered up or at least painted and it doesn't look that good painted.
it used for plastic laminate faced cabinets and also for lots of shelving units and furniture with a thin wood veneer printed paper.
it is also used as an underlayment under carpet and for some wall surfaces - like wood paneling.
I hope this helps

The only advantage is it's cheap. Personally, I won't use it for anything. Whenever you see it being used on the exterior of a new house for the sheathing, you can be sure the siding will be falling off in the future.
Don't ever use it for subfloor in the bathroom or kitchen. It will absorb moisture and buckle up and the flooring will come up,too.
Sorry if this is not what you wanted for an answer but I've been building houses in the North East for almost 40 years.

I remember a commercial that showed a couple of eggs in a frying pan and the tag line said - this is your brain on drugs. Another one was the photo of an old wrinkled woman with a cigarette in her mouth with the tagline - Smoking is Glamorous. If you can do something like that visually, because most people will spend about 20 seconds reading and retaining what you say, but will look at photo and be able to tell you years later what was on it - how about a photo of a super skinny anorexic model who eats 8 grapes a day and ends up dying and a photo of an extremely obese person a the other end of the rung, and one with a person in reasonable shape, looks like exercises, eats good foods then ask the question - Healthy? Your Choice!! It has been said a picture is worth a 1000 words - think about it.

Jero has the clue. "GLIT" as I like to call it,,, but won't spell out why,,, is garbage,,, and the saying "you get what you pay for" is totally accurate.
A few problems arise,,,especially commercially, in obtaining enough material to do large jobs, at a decent price, fair to both the contractor and the consumer. Sadly the trend is "CHEAP" in the most negative sense of the word, but driven by "cost to obtain"
I'll give you one more example, and suggest I NEVER USE PB.
Go to any big box home store, or store that sells what passes for furniture these days. Vanities for baths, kitchen cabinets and counter top substrate, Book shelf units and computer desks, are almost entirely made of some form of PB. Sadly we have largely become a throw away society, sometimes with more dollars than "Sense" and take what we think is the "BEST" price.
The reality is that there are never enough trees to create enough material for our exponential needs.

Advantages- a none it is cheap and worthless, I believe they should completley outlaw it for construction use.
This stuff is a mess, you can't get it wet, it turns to saw dust. If you do use it you have to seal it so there is the extra money you could have used to buy plywood.

Particle board is the saw mill's answer to ; What do we do with all this saw dust ? Make particle board. It can be used for some applications that have no presence of moisture. I would be careful with what I used it for.

particle board is crap. offhand, I can't think of anywhere or anything I'd use it.
it used to be used as floor underlayment back in the day, but no one uses it any more.
if it gets wet it swells and crumbles, it's a good mold growing media too.
