I've been learning to play for about over a year. The only guitar learning was based on a book playing simple short melodies. Along with a metronome at around 60-80bpm, I can go through the book of melodies with consistency. Now I want to learn a real song. I found sheet music of The Beatles "I wanna hold your hand". I looked at it and was overwealmed. How do I practice the melodies and the chords properly?

Sight reading sheet music can often be difficult even for the advanced player. You must count, the foundation of music, in rhythm, try tapping your foot, and practice it many times. It would help a lot to get a copy of the song to listen to so you you can hear the instruments exactly. Sheet music isn't always played as it is written. The object is called esprit. The burning desire inside of a performer to achieve exactly what the composer intended. The whole point is to feel. Getting good at a song is the same as getting a gig at Carnagie Hall... practice practice practice. But then again, you already knew that didn't you?

You need a book by Fredrick Noad. It is called Solo Guitar playing. There is a book one and two. Book one starts at the beginning and then you learn to play easy songs that have a bass line and then harmony. This style is called Classical guitar. It is the best way to learn.
There is a lot of Classical guitar music but not many good guitar arrangements of popular tunes. If you can find any music arrangements by Howard Heitmeyer then you have hit gold. He is legendary amongst guitarists and has done some wonderful guitar arrangements for all levels of players. I studied with him when I was young. Howard's in his 80's now. There is a Howard Heitmeyer Yahoo group. If you want some music of his I can email you a PDF with some songs to play. He arranged Beatles songs and still teaches in North Hollywood. I want to hold your hand is not a hard song but it is not very easy to play as solo guitar. And I Love her is a good one for this.
Yesterday and Michelle and Here There and Everywhere are good as well as the Long and Winding Road. There is a book of Beatles songs arranged for Classical guitar. It is OK but not as good as the arrangements by Heitmeyer.
Contact me I would be glad to help I have been playing 47 years and I play this style as well as Jazz and Flamenco guitar.

learn the chords then the progression for rhythm Learn the notes of the staff, then playing the scale on the guitar. Now when you see the notes when you play Lead you will be able to play them upon sight. You won't be memorizing a song but learning the music.
