I am currently a student in highschool. I noticed that a lot of the students that I meet and am friends with want to become special education teachers. I think it is great that they want to get into teacher, especially one that is in such high demand. But I was wondering: why special education? why not math or history? I also noticed that many of the special needs teachers around the school are young graduate students. Why is the field so popular?

There are so many reasons to go into Special Education. I worked as an assistant to a great Special Education teacher for seven years and it was wonderful. Together we believed that the children could do anything and we lead them to believe it too. We expected as much out of them as regular education children only at a lower level. So many of our children tested out , which brought joy to our hearts. A lot of the time they will try harder than the rest of the children because they have something to prove to the world. My hat is off to anyone that wants to go into this field.

I am a teacher, but NOT of special ed. There are three teaching positions that are in high demand: Science, Math, and Special Ed. teachers. These teachers will never have a problem finding a job. I don't know why anyone would want to teach Special Ed. I have a MS in Special Ed, but I refuse to teach emotionally disturbed children who scream, hit, throw furniture, etc... and this is going on while you are trying to teach a whole class. Children who have problems learning are also special ed, however, don't let anyone fool you, most of these types of kids are also emotionally disturbed, with parents who don't know what to do with their own children. I was involved with teaching special ed for one year (not by choice) and I hated it. The older the special ed child is, the more dangerous they could be.
Early Intervention (going to peoples homes and doing educational therapy with their toddlers who are behind in their age group) is a field in which a special education teacher can get involved in. One can make a lot of money doing this, but you have to be able to tolerate the screaming of babies. Anyone who goes into special ed with rose tinted glasses, will soon be sadly dissapointed. Anyone who tells you it's "rewarding and challenging" is full of @#%&! Those words are euphamisms for Underpaid, overworked, and major migrains... and "I hate those F***** kids!

Lots of reasons...

1. It is very rewarding.
2. It is in demand.
3. It counts as being "high need" in many school
districts so you can get money to pay off
some of your student loans.
4. Most school districts give an extra stipend
for SpEd teachers.
