I bought a Linksys wireless router about a month ago and since then the phone has had a whining sound to it (it still works but it is annoying.) could this be due to my wireless router? (Both are 2.4 ghz.) I am wanting to use the router to take game systems online so I need it. :-(

You can find out easily if thats the problem.

Step 1. Shut off your computer completely
Step 2. Unplug the cable from the router and plug it directly from your computer to the phone dsl jack in your wall.

in other words unplug the router. Don't uninstall the router as there is no need but unplug it and shut off the power to it.

Then get on the Internet and try the phone. If it still is making the sound we know for sure it's not your router.

If the sound is not there it's probably your router.

There are two possible causes...

1) You have a cordless phone running at 2.4GHz, which is very close to the frequency used by the commoner WiFi networking...
changing to a 5.8 Ghz phone will cure this. A less effective cure is to move your phone further from the router.

2) You have DSL, which shares the phone line with your phones... and you either forgot to put a filter on your phone connection, or the filter is breaking down. (not as rare as you'd suppose, I've had to replace two in as many months). You may want to get your DSL/phone provider to check your lines, too

Yes, try changing the channel of your phone (if possible it's slightly easier) or your router (by going into the configuration settings).

It is possible if it is a cordless phone. Unplug the router and see if the noise diappears...problem solved.
