Okay, every piercing will hurt, it is a needle passing through your tissue. Out of all places that can be pierced, that is NOT one of the worst. Believe me..Don't worry about the numbing the piercing, find a good piercer and it shoudn't hurt unnecissarily, and it will be over very fast. It is a very general piercing, and not very painful at all, and I have had some painful piercings. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, so it will probably be different for you than for me...Everyone feels it differently... But It shouldn't hurt very bad.... Don't take any medicine before the piercing, but most piercers actually reccomend ibuprofen for AFTER the piercing, it helps minimize swelling.
The clamps were more painful than the piercing, and the healing process makes it uncomfortable. You have to throughly follow the aftercare, you will swell, eating may be uncomfortable,a nd then yu should get a new toothbrush, using alcohol-free mouthwash after everytime you eat, keep food and bacteria out of it, keep it clean...etc.
If you get it done, make sure that the piercer explains everything to your satisfaction and understanding, and then make sure that you follow their instructions. And don't change the jewelry until the piercer says you can, or it is completly healed. Take care of it to not get an infection...
Its understandable to be nervous, but don't work yourself up. It's not bad.
Do research: Pictures, exeriences, risks and tips at..

You could also see videos of people getting it done on YouTube.com..blah, blah.. check it all out if you are curious...

None of these are a freaking answer! Having your lip pierced feels a little bit like biting it. It's a quick pinch followed by a dull ache. I didn't think the piercing itself was too bad, but the swelling afterwards was a bit uncomfortable (though not intolerable). I hit my mouth on a friends head once, and that hurt a hell of a lot worse. As for the piercing, it goes like this. The piercer will clean the area and probably have you swish your mouth with Listerine. S/he will dry the area and mark it inside and out, and then center a pair of forceps (clamp) on the holes. They will use a hollow, tri-beveled piercing needle (usually 16g, sometimes 14g) to do the piercing. The tip will be aligned with the outside of your lip, and the piercer will ask you to breathe. On your exhale, the piercer will pierce your lip as fast as you can snap your fingers. The clamp will come off, you'll be sitting there with a needle through your lip. The jewelry, which is the same diameter as the needle will finish pushing the needle out, and then the piercer will attach the other end of your piercing (either a bead for a CBR, or a ball for a barbell / labret stud). The piercer will clean off the markings and any dribbles of blood or drool, and you'll be good to go. Keep some advil and ice handy, because your lip will feel bruised and a little swollen for the next three days. I liked holding ice water up to my mouth but not drinking. That made it feel like a million bucks. In all, the best thing to do if you want quick healing is NEVER touch it with your hands, and resist the urge to move it around and play with it with your tongue, other lip. Worst part - no kissing for a little while, at least until it doesn't hurt any more. Anyhow... Good luck. I think lip piercings are wonderful, and I hate it when people answer you with meaningless drivel. I hope that this helped. Rob

I will be honest with you, all forms of piercing will hurt to a point, I am not sure but that is the purpose of piercing, most people who do do it, will tell you that it is a rush, with every piercing, now as for the lip, I will say this much a lip piercing is not as painful as an piercing over the lip but under the nose, that area I guess is considered the mouth area, or may be in the tongue, or even that area of the ear that most do not get Peirce, you know but, If the person you go to that does it, should be someone who really knows what they are doing, okay
Good Luck, and I wish you the best honestly................................

Yes...any piercing will hurt to an extent. But if you have a skillful piercer the pain can be minimized. I don't recommend using painkillers or drugs. At least for me, accepting and absorbing the pain was part of the point of getting the piercing. But, I"m kinda weird that way :)

Right before they jab you with the needle, smash your finger w/ a hammer.......it will transfer the pain to your finger and you won't feel your lip.
