The purpose of government is to do for the citizenry what it would be either impossible or extremely burdensome for them to do as individuals. People didn't band together to form governments to pay for their retirement. They did it to have an authority to defend their lands, so that they could go about the business of prospering, or keeping the streets safe.

We have so perverted the true purpose of government in this country over the past 75 years that this government can no longer fulfill its true purpose - keeping the citizens safe from enemies both foreign and domestic. We spend the vast majority of our money on things government was never supposed to do. As long as we continue down this road, and especially let those who are not prosperous members of society have a claim on the hard-earned monies of those who can and should prosper, we will continue to see government fail in its ultimate responsibility to the citizenry.

They are supposed to protect us; but it seems like all they do is protect themselves and sit around and figure out more ways to help rich people and losers, so the really hard-working people go broke and never suceed because they are working too hard taking care of everyone else.
