Our son, who has Asperger's Syndrome wants to be a paeleontologist. What A levels will he need to follow his chosen career, and once he gained those necessary A levels, what are universities like for helping students with special educational needs?

Your advice will be most welcome.

I went to University of TN and we had alot of special needs and disabled individuals.

I don't know what the course work of Palenotology is like but if he has trouble with the sciences of it, he might consider Anthropology is a behavioral science.

What exactly does he want to do with the degree? Is he wanting to work out in the field or in a museum?
Anthropology is the study of ancient man and they work in museums, libraries, etc. I wanted to research the artifacts the achreaologists brought back, to me that would be the best job in the world.
But anyway back to your son, you might want to start with his schools guidance office and see if they have any recommendations.

Most universities offer a lot of services for helping students with special educational needs. You should look into what is offered when your son is looking at universities -- also, I would imagine that a support organization for Asperger's would also be able to help look for the best university for both services and academics.

As for classes he will need, I'm not sure what is offered. Definately he needs to take chemistry and biology -- if you can get him involved in summer programs there are some great ones. Most that I've seen for summer programs are for archaeology, but that will give him a good sense of whether he will like paleontology. Hope that helps

Hi Bazranz,

He will need English, Maths, Biology and another science subject would be very helpful.

Many UK universities welcome students with special needs and as long as they are made aware of his needs they will accomodate him.

I am not sure about paeleontology but the University of Portsmouth do a Paeleobiology degree. A good friend of mine graduated with a 2.1 a few years ago with this degree.

go to www.port.ac.uk if you want to have a look. I think the course is still running. All the details for special needs students are available on the site.

I wish your son every success with his studies and the very best of luck.

That will be quite a challenge, I wish him luck. I used to work with kids with Asperger's Syndrome. Paeleontology is a science, so I would guess biology and math would be of the utmost importance. I wouldn't expect universities to be that helpful to him, you're probably going to have to do a lot of advocating (which you've probably done most of his life). Check out the websites of some universities he's interested in, they would typically have a section for that. Or start making phone calls.

Good luck to your son.

He will need to do Biology/physics/chemistry/maths all the sciences.
My daughter had learning difficulties and went on to college although she did not want university she went on to have a good carer so I wish your son well and good luck.
Most University will have a structure in place just like colleges to help and support your son after all if he passes those A levels he has proved his worth.

I don't know about A levels (sad American), but I do know that the level of special needs assistance varies from school to school.
I also know of many people with special needs who are successful at university, so you should be able to find one.
