I've attached URLs for a wonderful living history site called Plimouth Plantation. They are not only a great place to visit, but have a solid on-line presence. If you can't get a believable answer from these (people skins? oh please. . . ), contact the interpretive folks at Plimouth Plantation to aid you in your quest for education.

When they had any, oiled paper. It would let in some light and keep out the rain.
