Having "been to America" gives little knowledge to actually knowing what Americans feel and/or react. I've been to Morocco but I would never speak to what they are defensive about, having not witnessed it in the multitude. As many have said here, this statement that Americans are defensive is pretty broad since you don't know all Americans.
Are the other countries defensive because they are insecure? Do they laugh at themselves? What is the problem with countries that seek to do harm against other countries for the sake of their personal belief about that country. This is probably a better way to pose that kind of question rather than seek out a specific country that you know so little about.

Hmmm.... have you met MOST Americans? Or talked to MOST Americans? Or even seen MOST Americans in action? I doubt seriously that that is even possible. Sooooo.....long story short, you have no basis for your accusations which makes your question an invalid one.
Now, if you were to have asked why most of the Americans you have ENCOUNTERED are so defensive then my answer would have been that maybe those few Americans were defensive as a result of your offensive behavior toward them. Just a guess though, really.

I laugh at myself, and many others do too. I think that you have gotten a bad perception of Americans with regard to humor and insecurity. Funny, some of us even see Brits as being uptight. Some of us are uptight, but overall we're pretty funloving like you.

Instead of stereotyping, spend some extended time in America if you want to really get to know Americans. You cannot educate yourself on a culture by visiting Yahoo Q&A.

I am assuming your exposure to Americans is limited. There is a big difference between being defensive, and not putting up with others assumptions about us. We are, after all, Americans. Why would we need to?

I can easily afford to live in America - but don't want to - I've been there - and it's a circus - I'm from Norway. Lucia has obviously really set you Americans up - you are so so defensive - good job - you've shown your point!!

Because we do not "think" we are better then everyone else, we KNOW it. So when people from other countries come here & try talking smack we dont like it cuz we are not arguing an opinion, it is a fact. IT IS OUR PLANET & you should just be thankful we even share it with you.

it's because they have some America gene implanted at birth that makes them think they are the best at everything and everybody should listen to them because they've got war ships and missiles oh and the fact that most of them are just too self centred, well it could be true.
